"Gambia: WHO, UNICEF Help in Third Meningitis Vaccination Drive"

Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (07/08/02)

A preventative meningitis immunization program in The Gambia is

being aided by donations from the World Health Organization and

UNICEF in the form of vaccine doses, syringes, and fuel for

vaccination teams.  The program was launched last week by Gambia

president Yahya Jammeh and will end on July 22.

"Morocco: 1.2 Million Syringes Arrive for Immunization Week"

Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (07/08/02)

A shortage of syringes on the first day of a nine-day

immunization week in Morocco was relieved with the arrival of 1.2

million syringes from the World Health Organization and the

United Nations Children's Fund, according to Ministry of Health

and Child Welfare disease prevention and control deputy director

Stanley Midzi.  The shortage was caused by a local agent of the

Ministry having difficulty getting foreign currency to pay for

the syringes, and when the currency was found, the company had

sold out of the syringes.  The donated syringes, worth $68,000,

are enough for the entire immunization program, which is

targeting about 2 million children in the country for follow-up

measles vaccinations.
