In Thailand, National Center for Genetic
Engineering and Biotechnology deputy director Prasit Phalitapolkarnpim asserts
that the government should focus less on mosquito-killing programs and more on
the dengue fever vaccine trials, which are testing local scientist Nat
Phamornprawat's dengue vaccine, the first vaccine for the ailment in the world.
A pharmaceutical company is co-sponsoring the current phase II trials, and phase
III clinical studies are expected to start soon. The non-governmental National
Public Health Foundation is working to help the scientists come up with ways to
fund future trials of the vaccine, and a proposal will be made to the Thai
government to help fund the research as well.
