"Doctors Angry Over Livingstone MMR Talk"

Birmingham Post (UK) (www.virtualbirmingham.co.uk/internal/post)

(07/04/02) P. 7

British Medical Association Chairman Dr. Ian Bogle wants London

Mayor Ken Livingstone to apologize and retract a recent statement

in which Livingstone advised parents to opt for single injections

for measles, mumps, and rubella, instead of the combined vaccine.

General practitioner Dr. Anthony Grewal noted at the

association's annual conference that MMR vaccination rates in

London are already dangerously low.  One survey indicates that

London has the worst MMR take-up rate in the United Kingdom, with

an average of 72.6 percent of parents getting the MMR vaccination

for their children compared to the 83.3 percent national average.

Dr. Bogle noted that "the scientific evidence shows that MMR is

the way forward to give maximum protection to children in this

country."
