"Burundi: Health Officials Act to Contain Meningitis Scare" Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (07/25/02)
Six health officials from the Burundi Ministry of Health, UNICEF, and the University Teaching Hospital of Kamenge in Burundi are taking steps to prevent a meningitis outbreak after Kiremba Hospital saw five cases of meningitis earlier this month, with another two suspected cases in nearby areas. The prevention techniques include procuring 25,000 vaccine doses of meningitis vaccine, with possibly more supplied by UNICEF; 400 ampoules of chloramphenicol; training programs for health personnel; and a planned mass vaccination program.
