British Airways pumps $7, 000 US
into polio immunization programme
ZANA—British Airways has pumped in 7,000 United States dollars in
this year’s polio immunization programme joining other partners
supporting child health in Zambia.
British Airways manager for central Africa Mr. Raul Burband
disclosed this in an interview at Fiwale rural health centre where
he witnessed the first round of polio immunization in Masaiti
district.
Mr. Burband called for concerted efforts among all stakeholders
in the fight against polio and other communicable diseases in the
region.
Mr. Burband who led a team of officials from United Kingdom said
his organisation was concerned with the plight of children under the
age of five years that are vulnerable to the deadly disease which
has been responsible for high mortality rate among millions of
children.
He said British Airways was happy to join other partners
supporting child health under the theme ‘’change for good’’ for this
year’s immunization programme.
Speaking at the same occasion, UNICEF programme coordinator for
Zambia Ms
Tomoko Nishimoto said she was impressed with the staff in the
district for seriously carrying out the house to house campaign on
immunization of the children.
She was confident that the desired results would be obtained
towards the eradication of polio in Zambia.
And Masaiti district director of health Bernard Maswana paid
tribute to British Airways and other donors for supporting the
national immunization days (NIDS) programme expected to protect
about one million children against polio.
