All the latest on immunization now available Canadian Immunization Guide

OTTAWA, July 16 /CNW/ - New vaccines, bioterrorism scares - the world of
immunization is on the move and health care professionals need to keep
astride. That's easier now, thanks to the newly updated sixth edition of the
Canadian Immunization Guide.
"The Canadian Medical Association has a long history of promoting
immunization as an effective disease prevention tool." says Dr. Henry Haddad,
President of the CMA. "This indispensable, user-friendly source of information
belongs on every clinic and family physician's bookshelf."

Published by Health Canada and prepared by the National Advisory
Committee on Immunization, this edition has been extensively updated to
include new information on:
    - varicella vaccine use during an outbreak and in healthcare workers
    - pneumococcal conjugate vaccine to prevent severe infection in children
    - meningococcal conjugate vaccine to help contain this feared disease
    - Lyme vaccine for people visiting endemic areas
    - the use of hepatitis A vaccine in outbreak management
    - the possible use of pertussis vaccine for adolescents
    - new recommendations for smallpox vaccine in case of bioterrorism
    - talking with patients about immunization, to name a few.

The book also updates information on traditional topics such as
recommended immunization for infants, children and adults; active and passive
immunizing agents; and immunization of health care workers and travellers. The
section on adverse events has been substantially expanded and there's a new
chapter on communication, including Internet sites of interest.
"For more than 20 years, Canadian physicians and health professionals
have depended on this publication to guide them through the new developments
in immunization," says Dr. Arlene King, Chief, Division of Immunization and
Respiratory Diseases, Health Canada's Centre for Infectious Disease and
Prevention and Control. "It is the definitive guide."
