Results from a new ICM poll for the News of the
World finds that well over three-quarters of Britons support a full public
inquiry into the combined mumps, measles and rubella (MMR) vaccine. Of 1,001
people surveyed, 76 percent of the respondents said that the facts about the
combination shot should be made public.
Of those who questioned the safety of MMR, 55 percent said they believed MMR was
safe, down 11 percent from August of last year, while 28 percent said they were
not sure and 17 percent said the vaccination was hazardous. Despite claims of a
link between MMR and autism and inflammatory bowel disease by Dr. Andrew
Wakefield of the RoyalFree Hospital in London, experts from
around the world, including the World Health Organization, have found no
evidence of any such association, noting that the increase in autism diagnoses
comes with greater awareness of the condition.
