PETALING JAYA: Of the 12 Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) students
warded for suspected meningitis at the Kajang Hospital to date, all have
been discharged except one.
Mohamed Nawi Mohd Noor, 23, was referred to the hospital on Wednesday
night after a blood test revealed that his haemoglobin count was low and
he remained warded for further observation.
He is clinically stable but further investigations are being carried
out to ensure that the low blood count is not due to a meningitis
infection, said the universitys Health Centre assistant chief medical
officer Dr Fauziah Adnan.
She said Mohamed Nawi, a final-year Education Faculty undergraduate,
was being treated as a meningitis patient.
UPM put out a meningitis alert last week after the deaths of Loy
Cheah Kee on June 27 and D. Thiygarajan on June 29, the latter from
meningitis.
Their post-mortems revealed that Cheah Kee had died of acute
pulmonary oedema while Thiyagarajan died of an infection caused by the
bacterium Neisseria meningitides.
