The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is
working on a vaccine to protect people from leptospirosis, an illness caused by
bacterium spreading from animals urinating in streams of overflowing sewer
systems.The CDC reports that athletes
who went to Borneo last summer contracted leptospirosis, as did travelers who
went white water rafting on flooded rivers in Costa Rica.The findings are reported in the July 2001
Annals of Emergency Medicine.
