Feb. 22, 2001 - The state epidemiologist Wednesday recommended that children with foreign immunization records get vaccinated by a U.S. physician before attending Colorado schools. The plan is part of changes involving children’s immunization records that the Colorado Board of Health is considering. Also included is a recommendation to immunize all 2- to 4-year-olds enrolled in day care for hepatitis A. Under current statute, school nurses and public health officials can decide whether to accept foreign vaccinations. Dr. Richard Hoffman, epidemiologist and chief medical officer for the state, said he is trying to streamline infant and school age immunization policies, and align them closely with Colorado law. State law does not address foreign immunization records. “I’m going to study what the (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is doing and other states are doing, and that will likely affect what the proposal will look like in the end,” Hoffman said.  “You need to have a method that deals with the issue appropriately.” A public hearing is planned for April.
