“Congo-Kinshasa: Anti-Polio Campaign Workers Arrested,
Released” Africa News Service (www.africanews.org) (07/13/01)
A World Health Organization representative has confirmed
the release of all five health care workers who were involved in a polio
vaccination campaign in the Democratic Republic of Congo and were captured,
arrested, and beaten by rebel soldiers.
In light of such events, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan urged all nations
to provide safe passage for health care workers trying to get the polio vaccine
to children during National Immunization Days.
