“British Scientists Make Half a Million Doses of Anthrax”
U.K. Independent (www.independent.co.uk) (07/18/01) P. 6;
Connor,
Steve
In the United Kingdom, scientists at the British
government’s Centre for Applied Microbiology and Research (CAMR) in Porton Down,
Wiltshire, have resumed production of an anthrax vaccine designed to protect
military personnel against one of the most lethal agents in the arsenal of
biological weapons. The vaccine will be
produced at a new facility, which took two years to build at a cost of 2
million British pounds. The British
Ministry of Defence has received about 500,000 doses of the vaccine, and the vaccine
will be offered on a voluntary basis to troops serving in the Middle East and
in other areas of the world thought to be at risk of biological warfare. CAMR is believed to be one of the few places
on Earth where anthrax vaccine can be made.
The Western world’s other production facility, located in the United States,
does not currently have a license from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration
and is shut down at the moment.
