POLIO: Philippine President Orders Vaccinations After
Three Cases Found
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has
ordered that 12 million Philippine children be vaccinated against polio
following the discovery last year of three cases of the virus in the
Philippines, Health Secretary Manuel Dayrit said today.
The country declared itself free of polio a year ago, but the
three new cases are from a "mutant strain," Dayrit said. The
Health Department is to vaccinate all children younger than 59 months on Feb. 2
to 8 and March 2 to 8 (Agence France-Presse, Jan. 8).
