“Whooping Cough Rate Rebounds”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday that whooping cough has been making a comeback over the last two decades.  For much of the last century, whooping cough cases in the United States had been declining; however, the CDC said that the number of whooping cough cases soared from about 2,000 a year in the early 1980s, to almost 8,000 cases in 2000.  The agency said that the increase appeared to be real among babies, but it added that the increase in cases among adolescents and adults was probably due to better reporting.  Agency officials did not know why the incidence of the disease among babies—who account for almost 30 percent of all cases in America—was so high.
