VaxGen, a U.S.-based biotechnology company announced
recently that it will build its first overseas AIDS vaccine production plant in
South Korea. According to South Korea’s
Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy, VaxGen has signed a deal to create a
joint venture company with two local companies, Nexol Biotech and Korea Tobacco
and Ginseng. The new venture company
will be set up in early March, and it will exclusively produce the AIDSVAX
vaccine. VaxGen is hoping to have
finished construction of the plant by the end of 2003, with manufacturing of
the vaccine set to begin in 2005, pending approval from the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration.
