Utah State
Rep. Becky Lockhart's legislation, which no longer
requires
county or city health officials to approve immunization
waivers based
on personal reasons, was passed this week after
intense
debate. Opponents of the bill believe
immunization
percentages
will drop without health officials approving waivers
before
children are allowed in schools, but supporters assert
that parents
should have the right to decide what is best for
their
children. While Lockhart asserts that
most parents are
well informed
about immunizations and the risks of not immunizing
children,
opponents of the legislation believe that reducing
health
department influence will allow negligent and lazy parents
an easy way
out of vaccinations. The bill now goes
to the state
Senate.
