“UNICEF Launches Early-Childhood Development Project” Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (02/25/02)

Improving early childhood development by lowering the incidence of preventable diseases and conditions linked to poor nutrition is the focus of a new program launched by UNICEF and the Benin Health Ministry.  The program—which targets children under six years of age—aims to protect them against tetanus, measles, and other vaccine-preventable diseases, as well as reduce the incidence of malaria, pneumonia, diarrhea and illnesses linked to vitamin A deficiency.  International aid agencies from the United States, Germany and Switzerland are participating in the program.
