NIH Breaks Down How It Will Spend Bioterrorism Funds
Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com) (02/19/02) P. A4
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) will spend $600
million of its $1.7 billion bioterrorism funding on the discovery of vaccines
for anthrax, smallpox, and other infections, said National Institute of Allergy
and Infectious Disease head Dr.Anthony
Fauci.Additional funding will go to
pay for new facilities to safely study microbes and human immune defenses.
Fauci noted that diseases such as influenza and AIDS kill
far more people than the five who died in bioterror attacks last fall, and thus
he asserted that it is necessary to spend the
funds on research that would have greater use in fighting infection.Bioterror agents are just another emerging,
or re-emerging disease, he told members of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science on Sunday.
