MMR doc asked to release research
The Chief Medical Officer has asked the doctor who first
raised concerns about the MMR vaccine to turn his research over for independent
analysis.
Professor Sir Liam Donaldson has written to Dr Andrew
Wakefield, whose work suggests a link between the injection and autism and
bowel conditions, making the request, the Department of Health says.
He was responding to an e-mail from Dr Wakefield, which
claimed new studies would emerge this year showing a connection between the
jabs and the conditions.
The exchange follows declining MMR uptake rates in parts
of the country as parents either refuse to have their children vaccinated or
opt for single jabs.
There have also been reports of measles outbreaks in some
areas.
A Department of Health spokeswoman said it was not asking
Dr Wakefield for help or to share his information but was responding to an
e-mail sent by him.
He e-mailed us on February 11 giving us 48 hours to
reply. We wrote back setting out a list of questions about his research which
we wanted answers to.
Given the degree of interest in the subject, we asked him
if he would agree for us to publish his letter on our website.
We also asked if he would agree to turn over his data and
samples for independent scientific analysis.
Dr Wakefield has told the Mail on Sunday that he welcomes
the chance to begin talks with the Department of Health. Lets hope the
latest move is the beginning of a new attitude towards this serious dilemma,
told it.
