“Japan to Offer Vaccines for Afghanistan, Reopen Embassy”

Kyodo News (home.kyodo.co.jp) (02/19/02); Suk, Sarah

Japan has decided to re-open its embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan, and provide $5 million in emergency assistance to vaccinate Afghan children against measles and polio, according to George Hisaeda, Japan’s deputy press secretary.  Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi asserted that the funds should be disbursed quickly, in an effort to counter the high pediatric death rate from infectious diseases in Afghanistan.  The emergency assistance is part of Japan’s commitment of up to $500 million that will go to rebuilding Afghanistan over the next 30 months.
