“Call for Bigger Malaria Vaccine Study After Successful
Trial” Australian Broadcasting Corp. News (www.abc.net.au/news) (02/23/02)
Children receiving an experimental, three-component
vaccine against malaria had fewer parasites in their blood, but with the parasite
able to easily change its coat, a second type of malaria parasite was not
affected by the vaccine, reports Michael Good, head of the Queensland Institute
of Medical Research in Australia. The
study, which was done in conjunction with health authorities in Papua New
Guinea, should be repeated on a larger scale for conclusive results, Good
said. According to the researcher,
because “there are a number of multiple strains [of malaria] out there we have to be able to devise strategies
which will protect against all the strains.”
