Dr. Sullivan has never before spoken publicly about
anthrax vaccine. I suspect this letter
was written for him to sign, by current HHS staff, so that a prominent black
physician could weigh in on the issue...possibly because of the response of
postal workers, when offered the vaccine.
Now that the vaccine has been licensed, after a four year
hiatus, we may see more prominent people being pulled in to promote its
use. Hollywood stars or famous athletes
next?
However, if you simply read the new package insert for the
vaccine (the label) you will see warnings about birth defects, autoimmune
illnesses, etc. that should make anyone stop and think before voluntarily being
vaccinated. And don’t forget, there is
no proof the vaccine is effective, anyway.

Health Spending: Buckets for Bioterrorism, but Less for
Catalog of Ills (February 5, 2002)

Re “Buckets for Bioterrorism, but Less for Catalog of
Ills” (news article, Feb. 5):
The Food and Drug Administration’s approval to resume
production of the anthrax vaccine is welcome news for our fight against
bioterrorism. For more than 30 years, the anthrax vaccine has been a safe and
effective way to protect people from this deadly disease. Health officials did
the right thing in providing vaccine to Congressional and postal workers.
Anthrax spores can remain in the lungs for extended periods.
Federal officials should expand production and supply of
anthrax vaccine to meet both defense and public health needs. We should not be
complacent about future dangers. We should continue offering the vaccine to
laboratory and decontamination workers exposed to anthrax. We should also offer
the vaccine to others at risk, like postal workers and emergency first-responders.
The writer, president of the Morehouse School of Medicine,
was secretary of health and human services, 1989-93.
