"Volunteers From Indianapolis Will Test AIDS Vaccine" Associated Press (www.ap.org) (12/02/02)

Merck has developed an AIDS drug designed to stimulate antibody and super T-cell production.  The treatment is delivered throughout the body via an adenovirus with one HIV gene, making it impossible for patients to contract HIV.  Monkeys involved in clinical trials have experienced lower multiplication of the virus.  The drug will be tested on volunteers from a number of communities, including Indianapolis, with the first phase to discover if the vaccine is safe; further tests will examine its effectiveness.
