U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"U.S. Inventories Labs for Strains of Polio to Prevent Accidents" Wall Street Journal (www.wsj.com) (12/30/02) P. A8
In an effort to prevent the virus from accidentally escaping and causing outbreaks, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is taking stock of the polio strains kept at 31,000 laboratories around the United States. Any labs that are no longer working with the virus are being told to destroy their remaining stocks. The last U.S. outbreak of polio occurred in 1979, and last year officials recorded less than 500 cases of the disease worldwide. The institutions that work with the polio virus have until Tuesday to submit a report to the CDC.
