"Steep Increase in Meningitis C Seen in France"
Reuters Health Information Services (www.reutershealth.com) (12/05/02)
The French Health Watch Institute (InVS) recently reported a 32 percent
increase in cases of meningitis C since last year, also noting that between
1996 and 2001, infection rates rose from 0.14 per 100,000 people to 0.35
per 100,000. France routinely calls for vaccination programs when
meningitis C outbreaks occur in particular areas and usually begins them at
the start of new school years to target students heading off to college.
October marked the start of a three-month pilot meningitis C vaccination
initiative in the Landes, Pyrenees-Atlantiques and Hautes-Pyrenees regions,
affecting 300,000 people aged two months to 25 years.
