U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Smallpox Vaccine Reactions Jolt Experts"
Washington Post (www.washingtonpost.com) (12/05/02) P. A1; Connolly, Ceci
Recent clinical trials of smallpox vaccines saw 75 of 200 volunteers be
sick enough to have to miss a day or more of work or school. High fevers
and blisters were among the side effects. No deaths or serious injuries
have occurred in the last few years of inoculations. While National
Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Director Anthony Fauci notes
that such bad reactions are uncommon for vaccines today, they are more in
line with inoculation experiences from the past.
