Small Pox Vaccination Plan
| Smallpox |
The state has a plan to vaccinate some 7,700 public health workers and health
care providers for a possible smallpox outbreak.
Arizona's plan was submitted to the federal Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention and is part of a federally mandated national effort motivated by
fears of bioterrorism attack.
Health Services Director Catherine Eden says the possibility of an intentional
release of smallpox virus is remote but that the state must be ready.
The vaccinations would be offered first to health professionals serving on
public health and health care response teams. Staff members at the state's 73
acute-care hospitals would be vaccinated.
Eden says vaccinations would not begin in Arizona until liability and workers'
compensation issues are resolved.
