"Smallpox Vaccines May Be Put to Test"

Deseret News (www.deseretnews.com) (12/25/02) P. A34; Recer, Paul

European researchers have developed a test they say can measure the effectiveness of smallpox vaccines.  According to a report published in a recent issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers in Germany and France say they have designed a test that can determine whether or not a particular brand of smallpox vaccine will build the immunity of humans against the disease.  Dr. Bernard Moss at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says the discovery is groundbreaking, because no scientist has ever identified the types of responses needed in the human body to protect against smallpox.
