"Polio Cases Increase Four-Fold in Uttar Pradesh"
Press Trust of India (www.ptinews.com) (12/01/02)
The number of polio cases in Uttar Pradesh, India, has increased from 216 cases last year to 910 so far this year. According to R.B. Singh, the director general of family planning in the state, "There was a sudden spurt in polio cases despite the ongoing pulse polio campaign." The World Health Organization, the Indian government, and state officials are analyzing the situation in an effort to identify a reason for the surge. Although some officials reportedly said the increase was the result of a "cyclic pattern," Family Planning Minister Phagu Chauhan said he is not convinced of this explanation.
