U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Orange County Whooping Cough Cases Up Sharply"
Los Angeles Times (www.latimes.com) (12/12/02) P. 1; Gottlieb, Jeff
Southern California, particularly Orange County, has seen an increase in whooping cough cases. The number of cases of the illness increased from just 15 reported in 2001 to 96 cases of the disease, including two deaths, through November 29 of this year. Although the reason for the increase remains unknown, Los Angeles County Immunization Program medical director Nelson El Amin puts some of the blame on parents who do not complete vaccination regimens for their children; the state requires children to receive four whooping cough immunizations by the time they reach six years of age.
