INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Nova Scotia Medical Officer Calls for National Immunization Standards" Halifax Daily News (www.canada.com/halifax/dailynews) (12/05/02) P. 8;
Boomer, Rachel
In Canada, Nova Scotia medical officer of health Jeff Scott is calling for
national immunization standards and financial support for their
implementation in an effort to reduce strain on doctors, hospitals, and
provincial health-care budgets. He wants to introduce a whooping cough
vaccination for teenagers and a new chicken pox vaccine for one-year-olds,
but the new vaccines are more expensive and he cannot do it without
additional financial support. His notes that although his budget would
probably have to double from C$3.2 million with the introduction of
immunization standards, the increase would be returned to the provinces in
the form of reduced hospital visits and a reduction in deaths.
