"Nigeria Close to Polio-Free"

Due to recent immunization campaigns, only a few local government areas in
some states in northern Nigeria are still dealing with wild polio virus
(WPV) transmission, according to National Program on Immunization Nigeria
national coordinator and CEO Dere Awosika. The country is continuing its
efforts against polio in 2003 with more immunization campaigns, says
Awosika. Health officials in the country recorded more than 140 cases of
WPV as of July 2002, casting a pall on Nigeria's efforts to be certified
polio-free by year's end.
