"NIH Plans Fund for Vaccine Trials, Manufacturing"
Reuters Health Information Services (www.reutershealth.com) (12/05/02);
Ault, Alicia
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the chief of the National Institute of Allergy and
Infectious Diseases, has announced that the federal government is planning
a fund for companies to use to pay for vaccine manufacturing and late-stage
clinical trials, starting with vaccines for bioterrorism agents. Small
biotech companies have complained that uncertain demand has made it hard
for them to get financing for late-stage development, and Fauci says that
the National Institutes of Health (NIH) cannot afford to fund them out of
its own budget. The funding would be based in part on what the government
would pay for the vaccine. NIH is working on more partnerships with
manufacturers, Fauci adds.
