"Myanmar Government Reports Progress in
Polio-Free Certification Campaign" BBC Worldwide Monitoring (www.bbc.co.uk)
(12/24/02)
Dr. Ye Myint of the Myanmar Health Department
said that the country hopes to become certified free of polio next February, but
the focus on polio immunization will continue to expand. The last reported case
of the disease occurred in 2000, in Myanmar's Rakhine State. Myint noted that
after Myanmar is declared polio-free, it plans to increase immunization coverage
and expand surveillance activities, in an effort to maintain its certification.
