The Japanese embassy announced a $9.6 million
grant to pay for the vaccination of more than 30 million Pakistani children
under the age of five against polio. Since 1996, the country has donated $38.5
million in the fight against polio in Pakistan. According to the World Health
Organization, the number of confirmed cases in Pakistan has dropped from 1,147
in 1997, to 83 cases this year.
