INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS

"Group Outbreak of Deadly Measles Confirmed"

Mainichi Daily News (mdn.mainichi.co.jp) (11/29/02)

Japanese officials are examining why 109 junior high school students from Kitaibaraki contracted an H-1 measles virus--which has infected many in China and South Korea--despite receiving vaccinations against the disease. The incident marks the first group outbreak of H-1 measles in the country; most measles outbreaks in Japan involve D3 or D5 viruses.  Immunization procedures will be examined to ensure more protection against the disease in the future.
