"Fighting Cancer With Bacteria"

New York Newsday (www.newsday.com) (12/24/02) P. A35; Ricks, Delthia

A malignant melanoma vaccine combining Listeria and E. Coli bacteria is being developed by researchers at Harvard Medical School and Hammersmith Hospital in London.  The mechanisms for virulence in the bacteria have been removed.  The vaccine idea was based on the fact that melanoma responds to an attack of the immune system.  After successful trials in mice, a human clinical test of the vaccine is currently taking place in London.
