An epidemic of meningitis in SouthEthiopia Regional State has led to 26
infections, including five deaths, according to Meskele Lira, the bureau head of
communicable diseases prevention and control department head. The outbreak is
the result of dry and warm weather, he said. Health officials have started
administering meningitis shots to area residents, and medicine for up to 120,000
people has been sent to the region as well.
