"Corixa Entering Early Human Studies of Leishmaniasis, TB Vaccines" Reuters Health Information Services (www.reutershealth.com) (12/06/02); Ault, Alicia
Speaking at the Partnering for Global Health Forum recently, a Corixa official said the Seattle-based company plans to launch human tests of vaccines against leishmaniasis and tuberculosis (TB) next year. According to Robert Hershberg, Corixa's vice president of medical genetics, the firm has teamed with GlaxoSmithKline to test its recombinant vaccine against TB, which takes the lives of about 3 million people annually. Leishmaniasis, meanwhile, kills as many as 500,000 people each year, and there are currently no drugs or vaccines to prevent the infection, which is transmitted by sand flies. Corixa's Leish-111f vaccine, set to be tested in phase I studies late next year, is a recombinant polyprotein that consists of three antigens fused together.
