U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"City Seeks End to Flu Shot Disparity"
Rochester Democrat & Chronicle (NY) (www.rochesterdandc.com) (12/09/02) P. 1A; Leingang, Matt
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has pinpointed Rochester, N.Y., Chicago, Milwaukee, San Antonio, and parts of Mississippi as trial locations for efforts to equalize the numbers of people from various races and ethnicities who receive vaccinations. Last year in Monroe County, N.Y., 71 percent of white residents over the age of 65 got flu shots, while just 39 percent of African Americans in the same age group received them. An $800,000 grant through the Racial and Ethnic Adult Disparities in Immunization Initiative will allow the county's health department, in collaboration with the University of Rochester Medical Center, to create a strategy for reducing the disparity. The program also aims to increase minority immunization rates for the pneumococcal vaccine.
