INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Central African Republic: Meningitis Outbreak in the South" Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (12/24/02)
Mobaye, located in the southern Central African Republic (CAR), on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is the site of a meningitis outbreak involving 10 people, according to Medicos Sin Fronteras (MSF-Spain) acting coordinator Francis Coteur. "If the epidemic is confirmed, we will supply necessary anti-meningitis drugs and vaccines," Coteur said. Coteur blamed the recent coup attempt for isolating certain cities in CAR and allowing medications and vaccines to run out and put local populations at risk for infection. UNICEF is now working with the CAR government and rebels for access to areas of the country currently under rebel control.
