ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Orange
County Sheriff Kevin Beary became the first law enforcement officer in the
country Monday to get a smallpox vaccination as part of the war on
terrorism.
Beary got his shot Monday morning and his deputies are following the
lead, WESH NewsChannel 2 reported.
All deputies and their families will be offered -- but not required --
to take the vaccination, officials said.
Federal health officials have directed the states to speed up plans to
offer smallpox vaccinations to 500,000 hospital workers nationwide, and
President George W. Bush is expected to announce plans for mass
vaccinations of other emergency personnel this week.
