Be wary of combo vaccine

December 26, 2002

As an informed parent, I am concerned about the possible risk associated with the use of the new “five-in-one” vaccine.

Though no possible risks were mentioned in your article (“New vaccine combines inoculations for children,” Dec. 17), with five inoculations combined, it is not possible to trace a bad reaction. This puts children at risk for a worse adverse reaction by being re-exposed to the offending component, or leaves parents to face the decision of stopping all of those inoculations altogether.

I urge parents to ask their doctors about this and consider giving their children the vaccines separately, at least the first time, for a better idea of their safety. And I ask the Statesman Journal to please help parents make informed decisions with more complete reporting in the future.
