INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Anti-Polio Drive Gets VIP Shot in the Arm"
Indian Express (www.indian-express.com) (12/11/02)
Reacting to reports that India's Uttar Pradesh state accounts for 68 percent of the world's polio cases, India's Union Health Ministry has launched a media campaign to dispel misconceptions about polio immunizations. The campaign involves televised messages from politicians and celebrities, as well as posters showing President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam administering polio drops to a youngster. According to the ministry, 268 cases of polio were recorded in India in 2001 compared to 1,263 this year. Uttar Pradesh alone accounted for 1,033 of the cases.
