INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Vaccine Trial to Go Global"
Courier Mail (AU) ( www.thecouriermail.com.au ) (08/02/02) P. 10
Work on a cervical cancer vaccine that began at the University of
Queensland in 1989 will cumulate in an extensive phase III
international vaccine trial involving 5,700 healthy young women
from Australia and elsewhere. Professor Suzanne Garland of the
Royal Women's Hospital in Melbourne said the phase I and II
international trials of 2,700 women had resulted in very
promising immune response and safety profiles. Garland noted,
"If the vaccine works, globally it has real potential to reduce
the disease and also the anxiety about the abnormal cells that
are picked up in Pap smears."
