INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Vaccine Database Developed"
Christchurch Press (New Zealand)
( www.inl.co.nz/businesses/press.html ) (08/10/02); Geoff, Collett
As early as the beginning of next year, New Zealand could have a
national registry of immunization records for all children in
order to track their involvement from birth in the immunization
program. Parents will not be required to register their children
for the new system, which plans to start by adding only newborns
instead of babies already going through the national immunization
program. Health authorities are pushing for the database to
begin before the launch of the new meningococcal vaccine early
next year. The government spent NZ$200 million over three years
to develop a meningococcal vaccine, which should be available, if
proven safe and effective, in April. The vaccine is expected to
prevent about 4,000 cases of the disease and eliminate about 200
deaths over the next decade.
