"UK Team Develops Malaria Vaccine"
London Guardian ( www.guardian.co.uk/guardian ) (08/19/02) P. 7;
Meek, James
The first field tests of a new malaria vaccine began in Gambia
this week, led by Adrian Hill of Oxford University. The DNA
vaccine, developed by Hill and associates, has already
demonstrated its safety and effectiveness during trials with
volunteers who agreed to be bitten by captive infectious
mosquitoes. The 360 adults taking part in the field experiment
will be divided in half--with one half receiving a rabies vaccine
and the other receiving the malaria vaccine. If significantly
fewer cases of malaria occur among the malaria vaccine group,
scientists will have some assurance that the vaccine is working
as hoped.
