"South Africa: Parents Urged to Immunize Their Children"

Africa News Service ( www.allafrica.com ) (08/07/02)

As part of National Immunization Week, South Africa' health

department is calling on parents to get their children

vaccinated.  South Africa's Expanded Program for Immunization

provides children with vaccines to prevent diseases such as

polio, tuberculosis,  measles, whooping cough, hepatitis B, and

diphtheria.  However, many parents in the country are not taking

advantage of the free clinics or are dropping out of the clinics

before their children are fully protected against the diseases,

noted Eddie Mhlanga, head of children's health for the South

African department of health.  "Half measures will not work,"

Mhlanga stated.
