U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS

"Priming of Human Papillomavirus Type 11-Specific Humoral and

Cellular Immune Responses in College-Aged Women With a Virus-Like

Particle Vaccine"

Journal of Virology Online ( jvi.asm.org ) (08/02) Vol. 76, No. 15,

P. 7832; Emeny, Rebecca T.; Wheeler, Cosette M.; Jansen, Kathrin

U.

A group of college-aged seronegative women was involved in a test

of a human papillomavirus (HPV) virus-like particle (VLP)-based

vaccine, given in intramuscular injections at zero months, two

months, and six months, with half the women receiving a final

dosage at 12 months.  Specifically, the vaccine was tested on its

generation of HPV type 11-specific cellular and humoral immune

responses.  All of the women showed a positive HPV type 11

VLP-specific lymphoproliferative response after the second

immunization and antibody titers after the first immunization.

Compared to women who were given a placebo, the immunized women

had a lymphoproliferative stimulation index 7.6 times higher

after the first immunization, including greater immune responses

from blood mononuclear cells.  The responses were solely against

HPV type 11, as stimulation indexes against bovine papillomavirus

and HPV type 16 VLPs were as low after the immunization as they

had been before the event.
