"Polio Cases in India Rise Sharply"
Wall Street Journal ( www.wsj.com ) (08/13/02) P. A14
Eighty-six polio cases were recorded in India during the first
six months of 2002, up from 31 cases during the same period last
year, according to the Indian government and the World Health
Organization (WHO). Worldwide, there were 480 new polio cases
reported last year, with more than half of those appearing in
India. Ten nations--India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria,
Niger, Somalia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Angola, and Egypt--still have
endemic polio, according to the WHO.
